Google’s infamous algorithm update due imminently
At the recent SMX East conference being held in New York, USA, Gary Illyes, Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst and Search Quality Engineer, dropped the biggest hint that the long awaited and much feared Penguin algorithm update could be set for release within the next few days.
Well known within the SEO community as the big kahuna algo update, Penguin (2.1 the last refresh) was released exactly 12 months ago today on October 4th, 2013. Since then, various blackhat and greyhat SEO’s have been in a spin frantically trying to clean up and disavow their client’s poor back link profiles in the aim of recovering from some seriously bad drops.
In most cases, these SEOs have been sitting and waiting for months for a Penguin refresh that never came, hoping to see the fruits of their labour be rewarded only to be stuck in limbo with nowhere to go.
So anyone thinking this will just be a small refresh is sorely mistaken as the long overdue update is set to be a large re-write of the algorithm, taking Google almost a full year to complete – hence the delay.
Presently, Google are said to be in the final testing phases and if successful, the release will happen very soon. For most SEO’s, this is a tense time as many believe that any Penguin release could hurt those who deserve it least however, the word from Illyes is the update will make a webmaster’s life “easier a bit” and for most it will make it a “delight.” Hmm… we’ll see.
Many SEO’s had wondered why Google did not adopt a similar policy of having regular and smaller monthly Penguin refreshes in a similar fashion to their Panda algo, however the reason for this is they wanted to push out an update that made both webmasters and users happy.
This all sounds positive but we’ve heard this kind of rhetoric before only to find that good, honest website owners have been hit unjustifiably and in many cases, never recovered. Let’s hope the messages coming from Google are indeed sincere as for some, this coming week may feel like a ticking timebomb waiting to go off!
All we can do is sit and wait. If the release does happen, it is going to be one heck of a crazy week in the SEO arena. Tongues will surely be wagging and the social media chatter will be off the charts.
